Best Picture:
Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Misérables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
Chris:
Who will win: This category, seemingly a snap for the past two years, is entirely up in the air. Different films keep getting bumps or nods and Argo seems to be taking the lead at this point. Great movie but I don’t think it’s going to make it without a best director nod. So my pick for will win is Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.
Who should win: My absolute favorite film of last year (admittedly I haven’t seen them all) was Silver Linings Playbook. I thought it was wonderful and I would be very happy if it took home the gold. The depth of emotion and acting ability is above and beyond past Oscar winners
Joe:
Who will win: I think Argo will be winning Best Picture, although there appears to be more competition for this category than in past years. I have read that this has gotten the top prize at a few other awards shows this season and it could be one of the rare occasions where the Best Picture winner did not have the director nominated. One film that could pose competition includes Lincoln, since most people love a good historical drama and a Steven Spielberg movie.
Who should win: I also have not see all nine nominees, but Django Unchained was my personal favorite. It was absolutely amazing, held my attention the entire time, and the directing casting all came together to form a great revenge drama, with plenty of darkly funny parts. Basically, what you expect from Quentin Tarantino.
Best Actor in a Leading Role:
Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook)
Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)
Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables)
Joaquin Phoenix (The Master)
Denzel Washington (Flight)
Chris:
Who will win: Daniel Day-Lewis. The man played Lincoln. For over two hours. Everyone knows about his crazy ways to get into character. It will be hard to beat him.
Who should win: Bradley Cooper. Silver Linings Playbook is the first intense showing of Cooper’s acting chops. It was by far my favorite performance of the year. He is up against some tough competition with Joaquin Phoenix and Day-Lewis, but I think he deserves it the most. Especially since Day-Lewis already has an Oscar win.
Joe:
Daniel Day-Lewis for both. He is a brilliant actor and I kept forgetting that he was playing Lincoln. The costume, voice, mannerisms, and everything else were incredible. Day-Lewis knows how to disappear in a role and I think he deserves a third Oscar win.
Best Actress in a Leading Role:
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty)
Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)
Emmanuelle Riva (Amour)
Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild)
Naomi Watts (The Impossible)
Chris:
Who will win: Jennifer Lawrence. Again, Silver Linings Playbook was fantastic. And Lawrence was a big reason for that. The depth you wanted in The Hunger Games is here. I can’t get it out of my head.
Who should win: Jennifer Lawrence. Completely deserved. Chastain is entirely overrated in this category. The only one I see making a J-Law upset is Emmanuelle Riva for her role in Amour.
Joe: I am severely embarrassed, but I have not seen any of the films that these actresses have been nominated for. However, I have read that the only real competition is between Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty and Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook. Although, Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest actress nominated in the history of the award and today is her 86th birthday, so who knows?
Best Director:
Amour (Michael Haneke)
Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin)
Life of Pi (Ang Lee)
Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell)
Lincoln (Steven Spielberg)
Chris:
Who will win: Steven Spielberg. Best picture almost always goes with best director. It’s the safe bet and to say its undeserved is selling him short.
Who should win: This one is almost too contentious for me. I love David O. Russell (The Fighter is one of my favorite movies) but I think Silver Linings Playbook could have been slightly better. Up in the air for me.
Joe:
Who will win: I think and hope that Steven Spielberg wins the award for Lincoln. If this happens it will be his third Oscar win after Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. He is a brilliant director, who has made some of the most well-regarded films in the history of the medium. Plus, he spent over a decade trying to get this film made, and the end result was well acted, visually appealing, and surprisingly engaging, since everyone who has read a history book (or lives in this country) knows how it will end.
Supporting actor:
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)
Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook)
Alan Arkin (Argo)
Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master)
Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln)
Chris:
Who will win: Tommy Lee Jones. All the buzz is for him at the moment and no one else really shines beyond anyone else.
Who should win: Quite probably Jones.
Joe:
Who will win: I will agree with Chris on this. And Tommy Lee Jones is an extraordinary actor and just of the talented people involved in Lincoln.
Who should win: I got to admit that Christoph Waltz was great in Django Unchained and Tarantino knows how to bring out the best in him, apparently. This is just my personal preference, however, and everyone in this category are incredible actors.
Supporting actress:
Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)
Amy Adams (The Master)
Sally Field (Lincoln)
Helen Hunt (The Sessions)
Jackie Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook)
Chris
Who will win: Anne Hathaway. Duh. Who are these other actresses? No one has even mentioned them. This is Hathaway’s to lose.
Who should win: Hathaway.
Joe:
It seems like Anne Hathwaway is going to win an Oscar this year. I am assuming most people were completely sold on her when she sang I Dreamed a Dream, live, and in a lovely close-up, in Les Miserable.
Who should win: I do love Sally Field, but she has already won two Oscars and there is a lot of talent in this category. Also, I have not seen The Sessions, but I really hope Helen Hunt got nominated for her talent and not for the fact that she was naked for the majority of the movie. She is a great actress, but also has already won.
Adapted Screenplay:
Argo
Beasts of the southern wild
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Chris:
Who will win: Argo. Argo's got to win something, because in all honesty it was pretty damn good.
Who should win: Silver Linings Playbook is still my favorite for every category its nominated in.
Joe:
Who will win: I am also going to say Argo for this. I saw it a while ago, but remembering it being extremely entertaining and well made.
Who should win: Lincoln? I just love everyone that Steven Spielberg survives himself with. He can spot talent like a bloodhound.
Original Screenplay:
Amour
Django Unchained
Flight
Moonrise Kingdom
Zero Dark Thirty
Chris:
Who will win: Django Unchained. Not that I want it to win. I just have a feeling that Django will take him this award at the very least.
Who should win: Moonrise Kingdom. Also debatable but I still hate Zero Dark Thirty and hope it doesn’t win anything this year. Also Moonrise was written very well. Don’t try to deny it.
Joe:
I will say Django Unchained for both. Quentin Tarantino knows how to write darn good movie. He creates interesting characters and I could not look away. Also, great ending to the film. Had he wrecked that, then the entire movie would have been a waste of my time.
